Recently voted America’s Number One Tourist Destination and Number Ten Worldwide by the travel website TripAdvisor.com, the Reno-Tahoe area has been known internationally since the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley USA. With 18 world-class ski, snowboard and cross-country resorts and more than 22,000 acres of skiable terrain, Reno-Tahoe presents endless powder possibilities. In fact, Reno-Tahoe boasts the largest concentration of mountain resorts in North America, all located within 90 minutes of downtown. Currently, a coalition is preparing a bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. There are only few places where you can enjoy the slopes in the morning and the fairways in the afternoon. But the high desert promises more than 300 sunny days for year-round training. Professionals and amateurs alike treasure the tranquility of 50 spectacular golf courses within a 90-minute drive of Reno. Named one of Golf Digest’s “Top 50 Golf Destinations” in 2000, Reno-Tahoe’s impressive selection of signature courses welcomes every level of player to the green. Named one of “The Fifty Next Great Adventure Towns” by National Geographic Adventure (August 2008), Reno and the surrounding Sierra Nevada have a wild side that entices explorers with endless opportunities to wear out hiking shoes or mountain-bike suspensions. The Mount Rose Wilderness is the closest wilderness to an urban center in the United States. Trails among pines and granite boulders open up views of Lake Tahoe and smaller alpine lakes.

The Sierra’s four seasons are an ideal backdrop for favorite pastimes, such as bird watching, horseback riding, rock climbing and even off-road Hummer tours. For a new perspective on things, a plane, hang glider or helicopter might provide a different vantage point. From high-adrenaline sky diving to silently floating in a hot air balloon, the skies above Reno-Tahoe hold many unforgettable adventures.
With Lake Tahoe and several other surrounding lakes in close proximity, adventures from boating, sailing and fishing to canoeing, swimming and whitewater rafting all are in easy reach. And of course the closest water playground is right in downtown: the Truckee River Whitewater Park, where random boulders and channels invite kayaks, rafts and tubes for some surfing and tumbling.

What started as a quaint walkway along the Truckee River has blossomed into a pedestrian link for a thriving downtown redevelopment. Built in the early 1990's, the River Walk’s water features and native wildlife sculptures connect the Riverside Artists’ Lofts – an affordable living and working space for 35 Reno artists – with the Century Riverside Theatre, a 12-screen, multiplex movie theater opened in 1999.

Since then, downtown Reno has received a facelift that makes the famous “The Biggest Little City” arch a cherished relic of the past. The city continues to redefine its identity with projects like:
  • ReTRAC, which depressed over 2 miles of train track in downtown Reno
  • “CommRow” - the new plaza over the railroad tracks
  • a triple A baseball park and entertainment zone
  • a riverfront plaza at the historic Post Office
  • West Street Market, an urban market similar to Pike Street Market in Seattle
  • Rink at the River, a seasonal ice rink in front of the new City Hall
  • Truckee River Whitewater Park where kayaks, canoes, rafts and inner tubes surf around random boulders.
  • The Reno Events Center, a perfect venue for hot concerts and headlining comedy shows
  • The Pioneer Center of Performing Arts, home of the Reno Philharmonic, the Nevada Opera and traveling Broadway shows
